Summertime is hands down my favorite time of the year. I love the warm days and long beautiful summer evenings but honestly, what I love most is the time summer brings to my family. There are countless ways to make memories together and a fleeting few months to do it but that also makes it all the more fun.
A summertime photo session with Silver Orchid isn’t supposed to be stuffy…it is meant to create space for timeless childhood pleasures. Capturing all that magical summertime joy is the easiest part.
Scroll through to read a few of my favorite hacks to make the best of those summer moments with your loves!
1.) Choose a location or a mini session experience that you would do whether this was about pictures or not. Do you love the creek than choose a creek session! Do your kids hate ice cream than don’t choose an ice cream truck session ;).
.
2.) Let them be kids. Let them splash and stomp and explore. Don’t stress about perfection. That is just stressful for everyone. Aim for real instead.. I promise that’s when you get the genuine smiles.
3.) The best time of day is early morning or the golden hours of summer evenings. If you have littles I know you’re up anyway so come early. If you have teenagers don’t you dare book an 8 am session lol.
4.) Make this about the experience, the family time, the love you have for each other…not about the “perfect” family photo. I promise those perfect shots are not what you will love in years to come when they are grown.
5.) Let your kids explore, splash, pick flowers, eat the ice cream dripping down their arms and all. You will have a lifetime of them being well behaved and doing what you want for the photo…for now cherish all that childhood wonder.
6.) Choose clothing that is fun and easy. Twirly sun dresses, overalls, rubber rain boots, or bathing suits and bare feet! Check out our Summer Style Guide here for some great options.
7.) And last, but most importantly, HAVE FUN – I’m talking to you mom and dad! Take this time to embrace YOUR inner child and splash, run, explore, and play right along side your littles. So often as parents we are the ones behind the camera capturing all the fun we planned, but your session is your time to be fully immersed in the the memory making, leave the photos up to me 😉
