Almost every single family that comes to me for portraits asks the dreaded question….”What do I wear??” I always say the same things:
- don’t be afraid of color
- don’t feel like matching everyone is the only way to go
- don’t put your kids in clothes that are totally outside their normal (think a spruced up version:)
I can say that easily to someone else, but I won’t lie, I know its not easy to pull off! I even have a Style Guide dedicated to this very dilemma.
I had the horror (jk) of being on the other side of the camera this summer, so now I can speak very candidly about the pitfalls and joys of listening to my advice;) My husband and I renewed our vows and followed it with a family portrait session with the amazingly talented Daniel Pullen Photography (if you ever visit the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I HIGHLY recommend you look him up he is just unbelievably talented).
Trust the Process!
I definitely stressed over what we were going to wear, but now when I look at the result, I am totally sold on the process! Basically, I chose a color scheme that was complimentary (remember, no matching) and ran with it. I also kept with my advice and made sure that the looks really made sense for my kids. I didn’t want them to look like models but I also didn’t want them to look like they do everyday (my son lives in mud boots and underwear:)…I wanted their personalities to shine through.
